Hugo Gernsback's Radio-Craft magazine had a section called Popular Electronics. The section was dropped when Radio-Craft became Radio-Electronics in 1948.  Ziff Davis Publishing bought the title and 1954 started Popular Electronics magazine. The magazine was published until 1985.

Gernsback Publications started Hands-On Electronics as a quarterly magazine in 1984. It was published monthly starting in 1986. In June 1988 Ziff Davis sold the title of their defunct Popular Electronics magazine back to Gernsback Publications. The Popular Electronics logo appeared on cover starting in the November 1988 issue and the title was changed in January 1989.
