In 1984 William Ziff Jr., the owner of Ziff Davis, was diagnosed with prostrate cancer. His children did not want to run a large publishing company so Ziff Davis had an asset sale. In late 1984 24 magazines were sold for $700 million. Computers and Electronics was not sold and was discontinued after the April 1985 issue. (The monthly paid circulation was 600, 000.)

A few computer titles were kept including PC Magazine. These magazines grew with the personal computer industry and Ziff sold his second publishing empire in 1994 for $1.4 billon.  William Ziff died from prostrate cancer in 2006.
