88-2SIOR1

88-2SIO Drop-In Replacement Board

A redesigned drop-in replacement for the Altair 88-2SIO serial interface board

  • Two serial ports that are software and hardware compatible with the MITS 88-2SIO
  • Baud rates up for 76.8K for faster data transfers – works great with Serial CP/M
  • Connectors for DTE and DCE communications with standard IDC ribbon cables – no more breakout boxes or null-modem cables
  • Mirror RTS signal on DTR without a breakout box or special cable
  • Send and receive without having to connect CTS and DCD input signals
  • TXD and RXD status LEDs
  • All settings are easily configured with switches instead of the confusing maze of wiring options on the original 88-2SIO

The Details...

The serial ports are designed around the Motorola 68B50 ACIA. The data rate for each serial port is set by a DIP switch, allowing communication from 110 baud through 76.8K baud. For comparison, the original 88-2SIO has a maximum baud rate of 9600 baud.

The serial ports on the 88-2SIOR1 are RS-232 only. They do not support Teletype (20 mA current loop) or TTL communication.
The 88-2SIOR1 has DTE and DCE 10-pin IDC headers for each serial port that allows use of an off-the-shelf DE-9 and DB-25 ribbon cable assemblies.
